HISTORY

Barangay Bawing derived its name from a kind of weed that abounds in the area. Until today, such weeds are still found in the Barangay. The weed called “Bawing’ (in B’laan dialect) is used to enhance the aroma of food. In Visayan, such weed was called “sangig”. The place was named by the B’laans after such weed because it is in this area that these plants are most abundant.

Barangay Bawing is one of the rural Barangays of General Santos City. It is also one of the nine coastal Barangays of the city. This barangay was bounded on the north by Barangay Tambler, and on the east bySaranganiBay, on the west by theMunicipalityofMaasim, and on the south bySiguelRiverand Barangay Bawing is about 20 kilometers away from the city center.

Barangay Bawing composed of 16 puroks. It contains of total land area of 37,684,388 square meters, used as relocation site, industrial area, agricultural and for pasture leased area. The populace of the Barangay Siguel/Bawing are composed of different tribes are as follows; Christian, Muslim and B’laans. The B’laans are lumads of the Barangay and some Muslims families. Jugarap Clan and Dupalco Clan were the first Christians that reside in this Barangay way back 1920’s.

Barangay Bawing was one of the few Barangays inGeneralSantosCitythat can boast of a variety of sources of livelihood. Apart from agriculture, fishing was also one of the sources of income of some constituents of the Barangay. Other uses of the coastal area include beach resorts, prawn and bangus ponds. In addition, pasture lands are being leased by the Government to cattle raisers.

Barangay Bawing was one of the oldest Barangay of the General Santos City and was defunct way back in 1950’s because Teniente Del Vario and Jose Jugarap Sr. resigned and temporarily caretaker by the Barangay Government of Barangay Tambler, General Santos City. The said Barangay was revived way back 1979 and Barangay Captain Victoriano T. Jugarap was appointed as Chairman/Barangay Captain of this Barangay by late City Mayor Antonio C. Acharon Sr. Barangay Bawing was renamed as Barangay Siguel.
